Nice story. I know from personal experience that Swiss club soccer can be just as partisan as elsewhere. Basel fans have a longstanding reputation as thugs. They're like the Millwall of Switzerland. I remember in the 80s there were reports they had "real" German hooligans "working" for them. Besides FCZ-GC there is also a huge Basel-Zurich rivalry that transcends sports. The animosity goes back centuries; if I'm not mistaken the cities fought wars against each other in the Middle Ages.
