Player Controls Ball With Buttocks, Sparks Riot

Posted by on Monday, December 3rd, 2007 at 11:39 am in Diary | 6

This is not an Onion story. According to Reuters, a Peruvian game ended in a riot after Ancash’s Efrain Viafara controlled the ball with his backside.

Sport Ancash’s match at home to Universitario ended in uproar following an odd piece of ball control by midfielder Efrain Viafara. Ancash were leading 2-1 when Viafara, who had scored their second goal, used his buttocks to bring a pass under control. This infuriated Universitario players who interpreted it as a mockery of their team.

Media reports said that the entire Universitario team chased Viafara, sparking a brawl on the pitch.

Fighting brought out in the stands and referee Percy Rojas abandoned the match when fans ran onto the field. There was also trouble in the streets outside, reports said.

“If they had sent off Viafara none of this would have happened,” said Universitario captain Mayer Candelo.

Of course, this brings to mind the brutal foul on Kerlon after his seal dribble infuriated Atletico Mineiro’s Coelho, who felt he was belittling their team.
