Interesting to see the pictures here as I stumbled on the page. My friend Stephen’s mom Inga is from Koln oriniganally. I don’t think the police will tolerate any shenanigans by any hooligas because one can then get them all erupted. You do a great service in posting others pics. Keep ‘em coming….

Heard of this incident but seeing the picture for the first time. Football is a spirit which cannot be controlled. But street fights between club fans is entirely different matter.

Yes it was interesting reading my own comments e year on, and the events were as I remember them.

In the interests of full disclosure, it turns out the riot police were initially called out to cordon off a pub that was found to have been occupied by some known German hooligans. However, not knowing this (and perhaps not communicated to them), some English fans saw it as a pre-emptive threat and took offence.

At the same scene someone had fallen from a statue meaning tensions were raised.

All in all it’s just one of those situations that is an isolated series of events that aggregate into one snap moment when nerves break.

It was interesting to watch it all unfold before my eyes but honestly it’s nothing I want to be involved with ever again. Had I not clung to a TV crew I’m sure I’d have got a little beating at the least.

Very interesting to read a first-hand account, Joe. Seems like the riot police were rather over the top, though it sounds like it could have gone down worse, too.
