Beitar Jerusalem Fans Boo Yitzhak Rabin Tribute
Beitar Jerusalem have never fielded an Arab player, and from what I’ve read from some of their ultras, they’re pretty darn pleased with that fact. So it comes as little surprise that they heckled a tribute to the late Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, assassinated twelve years ago by an ultra-nationalist who opposed Rabin’s signing of the Oslo Accords with the Palestinians.
Israel’s soccer federation on Thursday banned fans of the Beitar Jerusalem team from two home games as punishment for heckling at a tribute this week for the late Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin.
The boos and whistles at the ceremony marking 12 years since Rabin was assassinated sparked an uproar even in a society known for its sometimes rowdy and boisterous behavior.
I’d love to report that the booing came from just a few misguided folks, but Israeli commentators suggest it was widespread.
