Paris is awesome and I agree that the Scots are quite tame in soccer opposed to their southern country man the Brits. I think it also depends where you meet them as some can perhaps be a little more agressive.

I don't agree with the comment that in the 70's the tartan army were hooligans, the hooligan element was restricted to the clubs. The tartan army were more boisterous in the 70's and would invade pitches when we beat teams to take home souvenirs. The tartan army has always been a peaceful force and has always gone to games abroad with the devout intention to have a jolly magic and memorable good time and leave feeling we promoted our country and friendship in a lasting memory.

However it is good seeing the report from an American female, we need more of this positive writing from a non bias viewpoint.

Now I'm finding myself wondering how Scotland managed to change an entire fan culture. Because truly, it was as if every single one of these 15,000 has gotten the memo about being "Europe's cuddly drunks." How does a change like this happen, do you think, if they were indeed hooligans in the '70s?

My other main "fan culture" event in Paris this trip was realizing that the McDonald's I was using to get my to get my bearings was the place where 100 Paris St. Germain right-wing ultras pinned down and attacked a Jewish Hapoel Tel Aviv fan and a black policeman after a game last November. This led to two PSG fans being shot, one fatally. It's in a very wealthy neighborhood, too -- the last place you would expect something like this to happen.

Wouldn't it be nice if there were some simple way to alter fan culture? Maybe turn them all into cuddly drunks...

Is it the kilts, do you think? ;-)

I'm pleased to hear the Scots still have the same welcome we received at Italia 90, though it wasn't always like this -- in the early 70s they had the same reputation as the English. But the Scots hate looking like the English, so (like the Irish later) they became Europe's cuddly drunks, consuming alcohol in copious but benevolent fashion, and hiking their kilts obligingly for the local media. There's a whole diaspora of bar-owning Scots in Riga and Vilnius who stayed on after qualifying games there in the 90s, and who seemed to hold some inexplicable bellicose charm for the local women. Don't think it happened in the Faroes, though.

Very nice piece. Glad you had a chance for such a singular experience, condolences on the result.

The Scots' "peaceful occupation" of Paris had quite a profound impact on the French Ultra movement, with forums being filled with pictures and accounts full of unabashed awe and admiration for the entire week following the match.
