When these came out I listened and moved on. But my 13-year daughter (if you've been in Section 232,132 or 131 at RFK you've heard her) found them and now has them in heavy rotation. I like the KC song and like the Bad Brains DC song.

[...] This is what the league needs to build itself on: stories of revenge, redemption, long standing emnities, rather than the empty marketing we saw in the songs the league commissioned for each team. [...]

The always excellent Ian Plenderleith has actually listened to them all, and provides capsule takedowns of each on his Aug 21 post here:

I can just imagine the bands being given a list of things to mention about the teams. Be sure to mention the following in your song please: Team colors, mascot, stadium, supporters groups, past championships, etc. I'm sure the bands couldn't care less about their MLS home team and laughed all the way to the bank.

This kind of transparent, and poorly executed marketing will KILL MLS. I imagine most US sports fans are fairly cynical these days with Barry Bonds steroid revelations, referee financial shenanigans in the NBA, and Michael Vick's recent trip to the "dog house." And, lets not even mention the Tour de France.

If MLS is looking for a marketing angle, sell soccer to the masses as something new(ish), fresh, and (relatively) free of scandal and cynicism. An oasis of honest competition in a desert of sports scandal.

Hokey won't cut it, and may even scare off some of the faithful.

Ska-P does a decent song about Rayo Vallecano as well (at least, I think so - I don't speak Spanish, but the song sounds infectious). Of course, its also not really terrace material - but the song at least strikes me as authentic in a way that these MLS attempts don't.

I think "alienation" is a pretty strong response to this. It's just an annoying and kind of amusing example of what stupidity happens when marketing departments get together.

True, it does rock, but I wish the songwriter'd done a little more research into the actual team and its traditions. Namely, the lyrics "na nana na nana na nana na" make no sense. Section 8 uses "lo" as a vocal beatcounter.

MLS and whoever is working with them really needs to stop alienating fans through corporate ignorance.
