Soccer and American Talk Radio
What happens when you put together one of American soccer’s great evangelists with a New York City sports talk radio show host who thinks no-one born since 1980 has ever even heard of Pele?
Well, you get Peter Wilt — former Fire GM, and currently heading projects to bring MLS to Milwaukee and professional women’s soccer to Chicago — doing his valiant best to explain soccer’s steady growth in the face of WOR Radio’s Steve Malzberg almost impressive ignorance about the game.
The interview shows just how far soccer is from penetrating the mainstream of sports talk radio here; on the other hand, the fact that Wilt is even on it is probably a consequence of Beckham’s impact, and more importantly, the points Wilt makes to defend the game remind us that for the game to be established as America’s fourth sport, it doesn’t even need the likes of Malzberg to understand it at all. Not that I feel as if I should defend the moron, but Steve Malzberg is not a sports talk radio host. He’s a conservative right-wing muppet. What a plonker.
