The story of Iraq’s run to the final of the Asian Cup is a wonderful one in itself, but, as was perhaps inevitable, it has been doused in tragedy back home. Following last week’s celebrations-gone-wrong that killed two people, today over fifty people were killed by targeted bomb attacks on celebrating fans, as BBC News reports:

The first strike killed 30 people in the Mansour district, where fans were marking Iraq’s win against South Korea in the Asian Cup semi-finals. Twenty died in the next blast, at an army checkpoint in east Baghdad.

Thousands had gathered on the streets of Baghdad, dancing and chanting in a rare moment of national unity. Police say at least 130 people were wounded in the two attacks, which deliberately targeted celebrating football fans.
