Photo daily – 06.13.07 – A Sea of Scarves
The Pitch Invasion Flickr group page is growing rapidly, so it was hard to pick one out for today’s featured photo. The pictures already show the full range of football fan culture: from pyrotechnics to drunken geordies to those who just want to watch the game. Thanks to all those that have contributed.
One item that crops up a lot is the scarf. What is it about scarves and football fans? Whatever it is, the picture below is a particularly impressive demonstration: look closely, and it’s hard to spot more than a handful of people in this entire crowd not raising their Bursaspor (Turkey) scarf.

What, I wonder, is the connection between Bursaspor on the one hand and Texas on the other?
That’s a good question, Furtho, I shouldn’t even have written “raising their Bursaspor flag”…
Ah – a quick Google reveals that Texas is simply the somewhat puzzling name of a Bursaspor fan group.
Nice work Furtho. I wonder if anyone can explain the Texas reference.
I looked at the rest of his photos, and apparently Texas is derived from the turkish word “teksas” (if I remember correctly). I’ll see if I can find a link. Pretty cool picture though!

Roll over the image to see reference to “teksas”. They formed a T in flares! I’ll look up “teksas” on a translator and see if I can get anything more…
…ok, so on intertran, i get teksas to mean “making dense”…a reference to the density of the crowd? Cohesiveness? They be rollin deep?

Hi.. i’m a fan of Bursaspor. TeXas is the Supporter group of Bursaspor. they are not fanatic
, they’re also holigans , almost more psycho than river plate supporters..u know why they’re called ‘ texas ‘ because they ‘re just like the texas in the western movies..

As famous as Bursaspor itself, supporters of Bursaspor are well-known in all around Turkey; almost everyone interested in football knows the fanatics group of Bursaspor which is called Texas. The Texas does its job at the southern covered behind-goal grandstand of Bursa Atatürk Stadium.
The name Texas has an interesting story.
In 1967, Bursaspor supporters go to Zonguldak, for an away match of Bursaspor versus Zonguldakspor. Bursaspor fans show great interest to the match, thousands of people set out to Zonguldak; long and long convoys amaze even the police. This is the first time that so many supporters go away for a match in an organized way in Turkey. Police officers say “Are this convoys from Texas?”, “This must be a Texas convoy!” as Western movies had a crazy popularity in the 60s. With this match, Bursaspor fanatics become famous with the agnomen “Texas”. It is that the name “Texas” was not deliberately chosen by the Bursaspor fans; they were named “Texas”.
They are in curva sud of Bursa Ataturk Stadium, and they are always go to all aways matches.. 2008-2009 season they will travel 7881 kms.
You can always see lots of Ankaragücü football club scarfes and flags in the Bursaspor tribune thats bcoz the fans are brothers it is one of the biggest brothership in the world at every Bursa or A.Gücü game you will see the other ones scarf even when they go to very far away matches. there is allways some of the other ones fans going with them. These two teams fans have the biggest friendship in the world.They even say there is not 81 cities in Turkey, there is 80 because BursAnkara is one city. They have scarfes made with both teams on it.
Bursaspor fans (Teksas) were coming back from an Ankara away game in 2004-05 while they were in 2nd div. and when they were coming back on the road between Bursa and Ankara there were a big group of people supporting the terorist group Pkk and they all had posters of their leaders And the Teksas all got down from the bus and started throwing stones at them and then fight some of them fist to fist. Lots of the teroris supporters had knives and some even had guns but Bursaspor fans were not scared Atatürk said (Bir ölürüz, bin diriliriz) İt means “i know that every move that is done to brake/mess up the individble integrity/wholeness will be stoped by the youngsters who love their country even if it’s just done by stones ans sticks” Even Bursa’s enemies like Besiktas and Karşıyaka and other istanbul clubs and their fans congratulatied to the Teksas.
